Just 30 km from Edmonton, Alberta lies 348 acres of pure nature encompassing open meadows, pine forest, and ponds of water. This landscape variation provides homes for many different plants and animals.
WHERE TO WALK
W
hile there are 4 main trails throughout the sanctuary, The Boardwalk loop is the most known trail composed of well-maintained boardwalks that are wide and raised up along the edges of the marsh. Well designed and placed viewing platforms allow places to stop, rest and enjoy the tranquil moments of stillness while listening to birds sing in the background.
WATCH FOR ANIMALS AND BIRDS - BIG & SMALL
Moose have been spotted in the sanctuary along with North America's smallest animal - the pygmy shrew. On any given visit, you could see muskrat, red fox, deer and porcupines. For birds, you may see the red-necked grebe, tundra swan or even a bald eagle. If you need help to identify a bird, there is signage along the way. This is the place you wil want to bring a camera.
EXPLORE THE PLANTS
U
nique and traditional plants and trees abound. Look to the side for fields of wildflowers, winter greens, paper birch, jack pine, poplars, and white spruce. While the park is open year-round, fall is an outstanding season to visit. Not only is the sanctuary alive in full color of golds, reds, greens, yellows and oranges, it is also a stop for migrating birds.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There are no facilities in this area - so bring water, a jacket and bug spray for an enjoyable visit.
